Unless you are one of the few people who prefer non-crispy bacon, I suggest browning the bacon in a skillet first as I have found the cooking time for crispy bacon far exceeds the cooking time of the hot dog. Just look at the bacon in the picture. If that is appealing to you try the author's method, but for crispy/crunchy bacon this will not work.

My mom used to make those for us in the '60s - but she would split them, put sharp cheddar cheese and then wrap them with bacon. She cooked them in the oven.
