Bamboo Compost Bin

I used to have a stainless steel composted, but it was clunky, noisy and unattractive. This new bamboo composted looks so much better on my countertop, holds just as much and is easy to clean. It is functional and attractive.

Loved the pitch that it looked good enough to just sit on your counter...but it attracted a ton of fruit flies. Placed the bin in the fridge though, and that solved the problem. Still an improvement over how I was storing my scraps before, but definitely don’t recommend leaving it on your counter.

You won't want to print this, but I hope you'll read it before you discard it. It was love at first sight, the terra cotta color fit in with my kitchen decor (such as it is), but I didn't like the price plus shipping. Amazon had it for about the same price and with free shipping but the color was exclusive with food52. I bought it when it went on sale. I look at Food52 every day but I don't remember seeing articles dealing with food composting. Here in Vermont composting is required, either at home or by bringing it to collection locations. I am bug-phobic, especially the little flies that collect around fruit in warm weather. It seems there is no composting method which avoids them. My new bin sits on my kitchen island, closed, with charcoal filter in place and a green compost bag, tightly closed, inside. Even so, when I open the bin, I can smell food odors. I'm sure that even with the lid on, odors will escape and I'll see bugs next Summer. If that happens, I'll go back to my old practice of keeping compost in the freezer and I'll find another use for the bin. It's a handsome addition to my kitchen.
