It’s not every day that you get to sample licorice from a world-famous Danish confectionery. But it can be, thanks to this advent calendar. It has 48 confections inside, two for each December day. There’s plenty of candy-coated licorice, of course, in flavors like milk chocolate, salted caramel, and passion fruit (that’s what this maker is famous for). Plus, you’ll find a few sweet and salty classics mixed in for good measure. We’ll keep the rest a surprise—that’s half the fun, after all.

Danish founder Johan Bülow always felt that licorice, a Scandinavian favorite, was underappreciated. That’s why he opened a small shop in Svaneke in 2007, cooking the confection on-site so customers could smell it from 100 meters away. (The first batch sold out in two hours—no surprises there.) Word quickly spread, and now fans the world over are finding delight in all the sweet and salty notes "lakrids" can offer.

My daughter is obsessed with licorice but unfortunately, this calendar did not do it for her. The flavors are very odd (Mango licorice, salt and pepper licorice).... I also recognize that european licorice has a slightly different profile than American made licorice so don't want to judge too harshly but I think if you're looking for a licorice purist, this calendar might throw you off.

Huge Hit!

Sent this to my licorice and Lakrids-loving child as a treat since they won't be home for Christmas and are struggling though exams and finals as a 3L. It was a huge hit! Julia has texted or called most days to discuss the flavor of the day, and even managed to send me some samples. Delicious! I thought the design was a bit too plain, but they love it! I sense the start of a tradition.
