This is the tenth in our biweekly series from Amy Pennington – urban farmer, founder of GoGo Green Garden, and author of Urban Pantry and Apartment Gardening – on how to start growing your own food, no matter how tiny your garden-to-be is. Today: Whether your balcony is bathed in sun or swathed in shade, Amy has the ideal plants for you to grow -- tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, you name it.
It seemed like everything was adorable in the test kichen yesterday. The top three cutest moments? Well, drumroll, please...
You'll be hearing from the staff at FOOD52 every week in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life, and more. It was a week of surprises -- from babies to errant cucumbers -- and gorgeous food here at FOOD52. You know, just like normal
As usual, we spent yesterday hard at work cooking and photographing the recipes you'll be seeing on the site in the weeks to come. While there were no catastrophic messes this week, here are the top three moments from the day.
It was a busy day in the test kitchen when all of a sudden Amanda turned her computer screen, showed us all the New York Times homepage, and asked, "Is that Thomas Keller in my kitchen?" The article in question is about California chefs crusading against the state's upcoming ban on the sale of foie gras, headed up by a photo of the French Laundry's Thomas Keller standing and looking serious in a kitchen that looks remarkably like Amanda's. Well, we had only one option. Readers, we present you Amanda "Thomas Keller" Hesser.
We love the profiles of food world leaders and their real-life kitchens in Pantry Confidential, and this time they've picked Alaina Browne, General Manager over with our friends at Serious Eats. Her short interview is inspiring: she talks about her favorite ingredients (she always adds more ginger than is called for), her culinary inspirations (her Chinese mother and Indian mother-in-law), and the best places to shop for spices in NYC (Kalustyan's and Dual Speciality).
This is the ninth in our biweekly series from Amy Pennington – urban farmer, founder of GoGo Green Garden, and author of Urban Pantry and Apartment Gardening – on how to start growing your own food, no matter how tiny your garden-to-be is. Today: Amy gets us started on our herb gardens in outdoor beds and in pots -- with some Destiny's Child lyrics thrown in there, too. Happy May Day! I switched gears this week and decided we needed to chat about herbs instead of intensive gardening techniques. Herbs should be planted now and will really make your kitchen sing. Additionally, this is a great project for anyone with either a yard or a small balcony. Stay tuned next week when we get back on track, but for now, read on so that your kitchens are always stocked and your garden is always in bloom.

You'll be hearing from the staff at FOOD52 every week in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life, and more. The New York Times Dining section ran a piece this week about those kitchen gadgets that you buy thinking they'll make your life easier -- oyster knife, bread machine, milk frother -- but that end up gathering dust in a cabinet. But sometimes more is more, even if those pickle tongs take up too much space in your cutlery drawer. Here are our favorite kitchen utensils -- the ones we won't give up in favor of a simpler life. It's funny how so many of our answers are about tools that are just so "satisfying" to use!Click through for pitters, slicers, and choppers galore.
